The Taj Mahal is definitely the main attraction that attracts millions of tourists to Agra every year. Called the symbol of love, it was built by Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, whose tomb is just below the dome in the middle of the monument. It took 22 years and more than 20,000 workers to create this miracle. Shah Jahan spent his last years imprisoned in his creations at the Agra Fort and after his death, his tomb was placed inside the Taj Mahal next to his wife.
The white marble monument is an architectural marvel with fine detail, on the southern back of the Yamuna River. Verses from the Holy Quran are inscribed on it, the gems embellish its walls and the intricate inlay work adds a touch of grandeur to the structure. Another great fact that makes it a masterpiece is its symmetry, which is why it looks the same from all four sides.

The history of Agra is evident from the many historical monuments in and around the city. Although the history of Agra city is linked to the Mughal dynasty, many other rulers also contributed to the rich history of Agra.

Agra was founded in the 16th century by Sikandar Lodhi (Lodhi dynasty; Delhi Sultanate). Babur (founder of the Mughal dynasty) lived briefly in Agra and introduced the concept of class Persian-style gardens here. Emperor Akbar built the fort of Agra; Jahangir embellished it with palaces and gardens. Shah Jahan marked the area of   Mughal architecture when he built the Taj. The history of the post-Mughal period of Agra saw the rule of the Jats, Marathas and finally the British.

Taj Mahal time and entrance fee of Taj Mahal

Timing of Taj Mahal, Agra is not set. The Taj opens 30–45 minutes before sunrise and closes its gates approximately 30 minutes before sunset each day. It should also be noted that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for public viewing.

The entrance fee for this memorial is different for citizens of different countries. The normal fee structure is as follows:

• Foreign nationals: INR 1100 / - per person
• SAARC and BIMSTEC citizens: INR 540 / - per person
•  Indian nationals: INR 50 / -
• Main tombstone: INR 200 / -
